As a Craft Operative for our waterway you will play an important role applying to help us improve, maintain, and preserve our wonderful network for our customers to enjoy today and into the future. This will involve undertaking the, refurbishment or repair of canal infrastructure including locks / bridges/ aqueducts / towpaths and associated equipment, working efficiently to defined safety /environmental and heritage standards at all times.

Our Craft Operatives look after specific stretches of our regional waterways, however the team are naturally called upon to support work in other areas as required, so you need to have your own transport and valid UK driving licence.

Reservoirs are subject to statutory control under the Reservoirs Act 1975, intended to ensure the safety of the public below dams. The Canal & River Trust is the ‘Undertaker’ for 71 regulated reservoirs, spread across England from Killington Reservoir in the Lake District to Brent Reservoir in London. Following a company wide review of reservoir risk at the Trust, using the industry standard guidance‚ Risk Assessment for Reservoir Safety (RARS), the Trust have identified and implementing a large programme of reservoir maintenance, investigation and upgrade works for delivery over the next 5 years, with a diverse range of different project types.
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Reservoir Engineer to join our reservoir team.
The position will involve investigating project requirements at reservoirs, determining the root cause of problems, developing project briefs and working through the Trust’s project delivery process, involved at all stages of project delivery. You will be in a highly experienced team of reservoir and canal engineers, alongside hydrologists, ecologists and heritage advisors and working closely with canal operatives; providing specialist technical engineering support to provide the Canal & River Trust with internal professional expertise and ensure compliance with its statutory duties.
This will extend to all aspects of the asset life-cycle for reservoirs. Applicants with a desire to develop in the role with a view to applying to the panel of Reservoir Supervising Engineers are desirable with comprehensive training and support being provided.

Most of your working time is spent in our unique and wonderful outdoor environment. Your daily tasks will vary and contribute to the operation, maintenance, conservation, and improvement of the business unit’s waterway network for customers, local communities and visitors to enjoy.
Our Waterway Operatives at Sharpness Port are required to work a tidal rota of approx. 6 days on and 4 days off, which includes split-shifts and night work to provide a 24/7 Port operationThis will require some weekend working. You will also be part of a 24-hour operational standby team responsible for providing emergency cover for the Port and waterway. This flexibility is important in allowing us to respond to critical needs when they occur.
Working annualised hours of 1931.4 takes the average working week to just over 37 hours. As the Port is tidal, the typical work pattern has Waterway Operatives working tidal watches and attending for line-handing duties around High Water (HW) times over their 6 days on. Timings are approx. HW-5hrs to HW+1hr on watches, where you will coordinate vessel movements, and HW-3hrs to HW+½hr for line-handling duties. This pattern is broken up with periods on day work, typically 0800-1500. There is flexibility in the rota, such that you will not be required to attend night time high water periods when there is no planned traffic.
This vacancy has arisen due to a planned colleague retirement. The successful applicant will therefore shadow an experienced colleague as they run-down toward that retirement. Volunteering Leaders are also tasked with delivering day-to-day works in Operations & Environment, such as general maintenance & repair work. This may include operating Waterway Control Structures (further training will be provided), planned maintenance and reactive works.
The post holder will be required to work an annualised hour’s system which includes working any 5 days out of 7 rota'd system including statutory holidays, weekends and an 'on call' system. It is a busy role, and whilst much of the past year has resulted in many of our activities and plans being paused, we have a full 2024 plan to deliver for the Trust through our volunteering efforts.

We currently have an excellent opportunity to join the Trust as an Operative, carrying out more of the general (and more technical) maintenance/construction work needed to maintain our networks safety, heritage, and integrity. All our Operatives help with vital maintenance, as well as being faces of the Trust as key (and often first) points of customer contact on the tow path.
Our Operatives work an annualised hours system which includes working an rota system including statutory holidays, so you must be happy to work in an on call rota, which will include some weekend working. You will also be working with other staff and volunteers, Operatives to undertake maintenance and repair works, operate assets and providing information to customers, as directed by your Team Leader.
This flexibility is very important in order to be certain that we can respond to critical needs when they occur. Please only apply if you are happy to work an average of 37 hours a week on a rotating shift pattern, with some emergency call out expected.
Location and coverage
Reporting to the base in Galgate, Lancaster (LA2 OLQ) this role will be based around the Lancaster & Preston area and involve regular travel along the Northwest network. You will report at Galgate each day before being issued instructions on location of work for the day and transport; you will be expected to make your own way to Galgate each day.

We have a vacancy for a self-motivated Quantity Surveyor to assist in the delivery of our Civil Engineering, Dredging, MEICA and various other contracts in England and Wales.
We have a busy and ambitious commercial function and are looking for a Quantity Surveyor to assist within our Commercial & Contracts Team in providing an independent, expert resource to oversee the commercial aspects of contracts across the Trust. The Trust has a diverse and dynamic workforce and offers a great working culture. It carries out circa £70m per annum on civil engineering construction related projects,£10m on dredging, £7m on MEICA and various other contracts.
The majority of these are delivered under the NEC3 and NEC4, ECC, ECSC and PSC Forms of Contract through our Framework Suppliers, for which this role will assist the delivery teams in their delivery, as well as from time to time, dealing with our in-house delivery team and other contracts under various other forms of contract.
We aim to ensure that the Trust ascertains value for money, and to protect the Trust and individuals within it from adverse risk.
Location & coverage
Our QS will be offered on a remote working basis, with a requirement to attend our main hub spaces as and when required for team working and collaborative meetings. Travel throughout the regional waterway network will also be expected to enable site visits, liaise with team members, and to assess/conduct necessary improvements.
The allocation of region (north/south) and the location of travel will be based on your home location. Staffordshire and above = North // Birmingham and below = South
