The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations.  Our waterways are exciting, vibrant places to work.  We are looking for an experienced Digital Manager to join our digital team in Milton Keynes on a full-time one year fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.


About you:

You will have extensive experience in managing a digital team across a full suite of digital platforms and channels, ideally gained in a charity or non-profit environment. You will be able to juggle a demanding and frequently changing workload, and work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to achieve the best outcomes. You will have responsibility for guiding and prioritising the output of the digital team (across web development, social media, content editing and digital marketing) as well as digital strategy and stakeholder management. You’ll need resilience and a forward-looking approach to consistently champion digital at all levels of the organisation.

 

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

About the role:

  • Line management responsibilities for a digital team of 11 (7 direct reports), including regular 1-2-1s, setting and checking in on key deliverables, personal development planning and running formal performance excellence monitoring
  • Oversee and steer the digital team’s project prioritisation and output, to ensure delivery of brand awareness and supporter KPIs as well as supporting the rest of the organisation to meet their business goals
  • Maintain delivery of digital fundamentals and BAU (Business As Usual) digital support for the organisation
  • Manage the digital budget and business plan including responsibility for a purchase card
  • Manage and oversee digital input to key organisation-wide projects including CRM migration, GDPR compliance programme, and brand development
  • Implement the Trust’s overall digital strategy, ensuring key projects and milestones are met and building influence with colleagues to champion a culture of digital and innovation across the organisation
  • Gather digital requirements from colleagues and advise on how they can make best use of digital tools and channels to meet their business plan and strategic goals
  • Manage the specification and testing of new digital functionality (e.g. new features on the corporate website)
  • Support the development of a Trust-wide digital and IT training programme in collaboration with colleagues
  • Support the development and promotion of a Trust-wide innovation model in collaboration with colleagues
  • Drive a culture of continuous improvement and learning through the provision of digital analytics and measurement for both BAU and campaigns
  • Attend and chair relevant working groups and advisory panels including IT Steering Group

 

Knowledge, experience and skills:

  • Degree-level education
  • Extensive line management experience gained in a workplace setting
  • Extensive experience of managing digital in a large and complex organisation
  • Comprehensive understanding of digital landscape and trends, including an active interest in new and future developments in digital technology
    • Up-to-date understanding of:
    • Website and app development
    • User experience
    • Digital content creation
    • Digital marketing (including advertising, email, SEO, PPC, outreach and content seeding)
    • Social media management (including influencers, customer service and reputation management)
    • GDPR and other data compliance legislation
    • CRM systems
    • Website security
    • PCI compliance
  • Able to explain and translate complex technical concepts and jargon to non-technical colleagues
  • Experience of senior stakeholder management and leadership
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven track record of cross-functional working and collaboration
  • Experience of working in a charity or non-profit environment desirable but not essential
