Job Purpose

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations.


Provide the source of expertise, support and administration for the Trusts Microsoft SharePoint 2010 solution. Lead, advise and implement future SharePoint solutions and functionality. You will report directly to the Head of IT providing support and expertise on SharePoint for c.2000 users. colleagues, third party contractors and volunteers. 


Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

The Role:

  • Architect, design, support, configure, and develop the SharePoint environment, including a main intranet portal, team sites, personal sites and other extranet initiatives.
  • Apply appropriate Microsoft SharePoint/O365 updates in a timely manner.
  • Provide training, awareness and best practice to customers. Making SharePoint more accessible and driving greater value from its use.
  • Maintain, administer and develop SharePoint services, including Search, Kofax Scanning, Workflows, Nintex, Versioning, document sharing, forms and InfoPath services.
  • Provide technical support and advice to customers and work alongside the Trusts technology partners to resolve issues.
  • Co-ordinate, along with the governance & risk and legal teams, to ensure all content is secured with appropriate permission levels and access. Ensure those that need to, have the right training and awareness to ensure compliance with the Trusts requirements.
  • Deliver the agreed migration or upgrade for SharePoint while ensuring content is available across multiple device types and from any location.
  • Ensure implementation and management of SharePoint is in accordance with recognised best-practice.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant discipline, post graduate qualification in relevant IT discipline desirable.
  • Qualifications from the MS SharePoint 2013, 2016 & O365/SharePoint Online course stack desirable
  • Microsoft Azure/Cloud environment
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
  • Considerable experience of SharePoint 2010, 2013, 2016, Online and SQL Server.
  • Proven understanding of SharePoint administration, including: management of service applications, management of web applications and corresponding IIS components, site collection administration, performance tuning, solution deployment, search framework, and backup/restore.
  • Proven experience of working within a predominantly outsourced IT environment and an understanding of the contractual obligations that this entails


  • SharePoint 2010/2013/2016/Online fundamentals including out of the box web parts, lists, content types, workflows, templates and master pages.
  • Knowledge of HTML, JavaScript, XML, CSS and XSLT
  • Understanding of InfoPath forms, Nintex workflow, development and deployment, desirable
  • Keen interest in technology improvements, integration strategies and implementing new services in a busy, customer focused team
  • Positive, proactive ‘can do’ attitude with a desire to get involved and make a difference
  • Able to explain complex technical issues to non-technical staff in a manner that they can understand.
  • High degree of general IT awareness and computer literacy, including knowledge of related business applications software and systems e.g. SAP and MS Office suite.
  • Able to work on a variety of complex projects at the same time
  • Analytical, organised and self-motivated
  • Good written, verbal, phone and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate and work within multi-disciplinary teams
