Job Purpose

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations.


We currently have 2 Catering Assistant positions available to help provide support to our Catering Team throughout our busy seasonal period at our National Waterways Museum in Ellesemere Port.


You will deliver an excellent service to all Canal & River Trust customers within a destination which is accessible to customers seven days a week. Working efficiently and to well defined standards, you will promote a safe, secure and enjoyable customer experience and actively contribute to the generation of revenue, promoting Canal & River Trust’s products and services.


The successful candidate for this position will be required to work part time between 1st April 2018 and 31st October 2018. Working hours are calculated as a total for the season. 

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Working within required rota patterns, provide excellent and efficient customer service to defined standards in a timely manner. Ensure information provided is current, up to date and in accordance with defined standards.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness within and around a customer facility. Ensure all areas are clean, tidy and hazard free and meet required standards.
  • Regular checking and maintenance of equipment to ensure fitness for purpose. Noting/reporting defects ensuring issues are rectified.
  • Take payment for goods and services (including food), ensuring compliance with defined standards as appropriate. Receive and store cash and other means of payment, keeping records of monies received and process documentation.
  • Preparation of food and beverages as requested by supervisor.
  • To clear and clean tables and ensure the café is appropriate for customers to use.
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels within retail and catering units. Present and display goods/food offerings effectively.
  • Encourage continuous improvement through sharing knowledge experience and best practice with colleagues.
  • Assist with the promotion and delivery of special events and cover for other members of staff, providing office support as required.

Skills/Qualifications relevant for the role:

  • Level 2 Food Hygiene is desirable but not essential as full training will be given
  • Previous experience in either a retail, catering, hospitality or leisure role would be preferred
