Job Purpose

The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations.


We currently have a Senior Catering Supervisor position available to help provide support throughout our busy seasonal period at our National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port.


Working at our museums, responsible for safe operation of a site (or part of a site) and the management of a team or teams delivering excellent service through participation in activities, the sale of goods and services, or maintenance of the site to provide an excellent environment for customers to enjoy. Promoting the Trust personally and via their team through an excellent environment, actively contributing to the generation of revenue and customer satisfaction. 


The successful candidate for this position will be required to work 37 hours over any 5 out of 7 days from 1st April 2018 to 31st March 2019.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Main Duties -

  • Manage a team or teams of staff/ volunteers delivering a safe environment and excellent customer service in catering.
  • Adoption of required emergency, safety, operational, financial, other processes appropriate to tasks. Plan and implement safe working procedures - creation of risk assessments and method statements.
  • Customers dealt with to expected standards of courtesy and care; resolve concerns/ complaints.
  • Deliver targeted business plan objectives for services, projects, events, maintenance to planned expenditure budgets, regularly reporting on the same. Assist with identifying future priorities/ business planning and budgetary planning.
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety at the site. Identify and prioritise maintenance requirements. Instigate local maintenance tasks where required; liaise with other operational teams, contractors, the Trust management structures as necessary for the execution of works
  • Coach, develop and support the team performance for required measures, including customer satisfaction and other service standards. Report on the same.
  • Recruitment and retention of staff to assist with the running of the museums, ensuring staff and volunteer satisfaction is high and their duties are rewarding.
  • Displaying the Trust values and behaviours at all times
  • Ensuring that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promoting inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values


  • Level 3 Food Hygiene qualification
  • Customer service experience
  • Valid driving licence appropriate to vehicle for specific roles
  • Proven experience in a visitor attraction customer service environment,
  • Proven experience in direct sales, handling cash and the application of appropriate procedures
  • Proven experience in monitoring budgets and providing management reporting.
  • Proven experience in leading and motivating teams; directing, prioritising and delegating daily tasks
  • Proven experience leading volunteers
  • IT proficiency including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work flexibly, in accordance with business demands, to multi task, and prioritise work
  • Be able to demonstrate a range of catering management skills from kitchen operation to front of house delivery and small/medium private hire catering functions (both hot & cold service).
