    The Canal & River Trust is among the UK’s biggest charities, looking after 2,000 miles of canals, rivers docks and reservoirs; together with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings. The Museums are Accredited and the collection designated by the Arts Council England as being of national significance. We hold the most comprehensive collection of material culture, memorabilia and images relating to the history of the waterways.

    We are currently for a Customer Service Apprentice as part of our commitment to the legacy of the network, and offering opportunities for people interested in a career with us, we are looking to recruit energetic and enthusiastic apprentices to train in all aspects of administrative customer care and visitor services.

    As an Apprentice you will deliver excellence in Customer Service and provide support for customers/visitors of the Museum and the Canal & River Trust in the historic setting of Gloucester Docks. You will be dealing with the public on the phone, face to face and in writing. You will also be providing general administrative support to the South Wales & Severn Waterway Region and providing a high quality visitor experience at the National Waterways Museum. This is a brand new role and an exciting time to join the Canal & River Trust.

    Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

    Key accountabilities:



    • Part of the front of house team at the Waterway offices and admissions/reception at the Museum.
    • Accepting and managing bookings for ticketed events including boat trips, dealing with sales, cash handling, notice boards, post, email, social media and our website.
    • Cash handling for licences, electric cards, laundry and lockage’s.
    • Preparing and maintaining information displays. Stocking leaflet racks and ensuring that displays are kept tidy and up-to-date. Maintain merchandise and refreshment displays in the gallery shop.
    • Perform general administrative duties at the Museum and the Waterway.
    • Drive the growth of our digital media platform and website interaction encouraging users and followers to participate in regular activities.
    • Using the SAP system to provide financial and administration services to the waterway, to ensure effective ordering of materials and supplies, to work with notifications and other financial processes.
    • Maintain accurate and well organised systems of records that are easily retrievable.
    • To provide assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation of the building.



    Knowledge, Experience & Skills:


    • An understanding of excellent customer service.
    • A desire to learn.
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills that allow you to inform, help and advise customers professionally.
    • Ability to work well under pressure
    • Confident in the use of the MS Office word processing and spreadsheet software
    • Experience of working in a retail environment and of handling cash – Desirable
    • Administration Experience – Desirable
    • Experience of working with volunteers – Desirable
