    The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, we maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks and reservoirs, along with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings, preserving them for future generations.  Our mechanical and electrical assets play a key function in our network, connecting our canals and helping manage our crucial water resource.     We are currently looking for an experienced Principal Mechanical & ElectricalEngineer (Electrical bias) to bring your skills to our national MEICA SCADA team.  This is a key role reporting to the National MEICA SCADA Manager. You will lead a team of professional M&E Engineers providing technical expertise to assist in the management of significant mechanical & electrical infrastructure risk at assets such as mechanised locks, moving bridges, mechanised sluices, pumping stations and an historic boat lift to name a few. We are very proud of our acheivements over the years, however it is crucial that we continue to be innovative and forward-thinking in our approach, which is why we are looking for the most talented to come and join us.


    You will be joining us at exciting time for the team, and the Trust - as a team we are currently developing a new asset strategy approach to prioritising priority projects and priority works. Joining our exceptional team, you will help continue to build on the strong foundations of work completed to date and take on unique and interesting challenges of our M&E portfolio and associated projects.

    Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

    The Role:

    Your activities will include:

    • Provide the Trust with definitive expert advice on M&E engineering issues including maintaining the Trusts M&E standards and responsibility for the following sets of regulations on the Trusts fixed assets: E&WR including High Voltage, PUWER, LOLER, Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations, and PSS.
    • Develop, manage and support an M&E inspection and maintenance programme for delivery by contractors and internal staff. Input results of inspections into SAP notifications.
    • Based on the outputs of planned maintenance, the job holder will ensure adequate and effective processes are in place to prioritise large repairs, up-grades and new installations for all MEICA assets including definition of all required works in accordance with agreed strategies and standards.
    • Responsible for asset data quality within SAP, GIS and other operational information systems, ensuring relevant information and analysis is input in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Assess outputs from individual inspections or inspection programmes and make informed recommendations/proposals on the (re)prioritisation of work required, taking account of risks, costs, time, resources, heritage, environment and safety issues.
    • Ensure that technical specification and work briefs are prepared and issued in a timely manner to the required programme. Ensure technical management of MEICA projects so that effective and efficient engineering solutions are delivered.
    • Use professional knowledge and experience to provide definitive recommendations to senior managers and other colleagues on appropriate approach.
    • Lead, develop and coach individuals through the development of a people plan to ensure that the appropriate skills and competencies are maintained to deliver the objectives of the team.
    • Working closely with a range of teams, providing support in defining technical aspects of projects
    • Supporting internal and external enquiries associated with the assets. Responding as appropriate by reference to relevant information sources

     

    Skills, Experience & Knowledge:

    • Chartered Electrical Engineer with Full membership of relevant professional body at an appropriate level e.g. IET
    • Educated to Degree level in relevant Engineering discipline
    • Significant post chartered experience with proven experience of delivering complex M&E engineering activities and assessing M&E infrastructure risk
    • You will be an experienced leader with excellent communication skills who enjoys working with others in a team environment. You will be motivated, pro-active and enthusiastic about learning further, as we are looking for someone who can bring a strong set of skills, but also wishes to further develop your engineering expertise.
    • Delegates effectively to others and inspires others to believe that they can achieve worthwhile goals. Is a source of strength in times of uncertainty, leads without aggression or arrogance. Shows trust in the abilities of others. Takes a lead in uncertain situations.
    • Experienced in the delivery of excellent customer service standards
    • Able to negotiate with internal and external contact at all levels and able to support other areas of the business in an appropriate manner, taking account of overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate
