    We are looking for a flexible and professional candidate with excellent interpersonal skills and commercial awareness to work as a Museum Assistant. You will be engaging with customers, ensuring that they have a fantastic experience at the museum. The main key skills required are excellent customer service skills and a proactive, positive attitude.


    Additionally, if you any valid, recent retail experience of working within commercial retail shops or provided customer service to museums/public attractions that would be a real advantage for this role.


    You will need to be an effective communicator and have previous experience of dealing with the public, for example, providing information, advice or sales.


    This is a 6 month temporary vacancy with a possibility of being extended. The successful candidate for this role will be required to work 22 hours a week on a rota.

    Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

    The responsibilities of this role will include:

    • Welcoming visitors and handling face-to-face enquiries. This involves talking about Canal & River Trust, the museum and its collections, providing information about current exhibitions and events, providing general visitor information.
    • Handling telephone bookings and enquiries. This involves taking bookings for ticketed events including boat trips, dealing with sales and general enquiries and redirecting business and other calls.
    • Handling cash sales of tickets, gift aid, museum merchandise and refreshments. This involves operating the cash register and processing payments by credit/debit card.
    • Performing general administrative duties at reception. This involves sorting and distributing post, receiving and recording general deliveries.
    • Using the computer at reception to handle email bookings, orders and enquiries. This involves using the internet to access relevant websites and research responses to requests for information, dealing with sales and general enquiries received by email.
    • Maintaining stock records in the museum shop. This involves receiving and recording deliveries of gallery merchandise, updating supplier/stock records on the computer and helping to prepare the annual stock count.
    • Preparing and maintaining information displays in the foyer. This involves stocking leaflet racks and ensuring that displays are kept tidy and up-to-date.
    • Maintaining merchandise and refreshment displays in the gallery shop. This involves keeping displays well-stocked, monitoring supplies and ensuring that refreshment stocks are rotated and within their sell-by date.
    • Providing assistance in the event of an emergency evacuation of the building. This involves guiding visitors to an assembly point, helping visitors with special needs, being aware of emergency procedures and fire safety.
    • Covering stations around the museum and to interact with the visitors.
    • Performing any other tasks as reasonably required by the Head of Museums.

    Experience, skills and qualifications required

    • Experience of working in a retail or customer-facing service environment
    • Experience of working in a gallery, museum or visitor attraction
    • Experience of handling cash sales
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
