    This role will be based on the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and River Severn Navigation but the role will require you to work flexibly within the whole Wales and South West Area.


    As a Craft Operative for our waterway you will play an important role applying to help us improve, maintain and preserve our wonderful waterway network for our customers to enjoy today and into the future by efficiently supplying the business with complete lock gate and lock gate parts for the entire network in line with safety requirements and heritage standards. Meeting orders in a timely manner to contribute to the successful delivery of the general works programme. Responding to business needs, enhancing the reputation of the network as a valued national asset and supporting Canal & River Trust’s aims to improve safety and increase the number of people using the waterways whilst protecting the heritage and integrity of the inland waterway network.


    The role holder will also undertake the manufacture, refurbishment or repair of lock gates and associated equipment, working efficiently to defined standards.

    Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

    Key Accountabilities:

    • Working outside, using specific skills, carry out maintenance and repairs works to the waterway infrastructure to ensure network availability is maximised or in a dedicated role, ensure the completion of duties for that specific role taking a lead.
    • Assist the Area Operations Manager in the planning of works using a knowledge of the craft to ensure that works are completed to time, budget and quality.
    • Provide customer service through operation of the Trust’s assets in a safe and timely manner and responding to face to face customer enquiries to maximise customer satisfaction.
    • Ensure that the environment and heritage of the waterways are considered during all works to guarantee their protection.
    • Provide a first level of response for reactive works to ensure the safety of customer and the availability of the network, participating in an on call rota as required.
    • Work alongside and supervise volunteers to ensure the Trust has sufficient resources to be sustainable, whilst ensuring the satisfaction of the volunteers is high.
    • Undertake work in a productive and efficient manner delivering the work the correct standard and to the agreed programme.
    • Display the Trust values and behaviours at all times
    • Ensure that diversity and inclusion are integrated into all aspects of Trust life and promote inclusion by challenging behaviour, practices, actions, or decisions that are counter to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values
    • Lead volunteer groups along the canal

    Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

    • Maths and English GCSE
    • Recognised qualification– e.g. NVQ Level 2/3 or City & Guilds or Completed Apprenticeship in a particular craft e.g. Bricklaying, joinery
    • CAAT Competencies
    • Some experience of manual work
    • Some experience of customer service
    • Some experience of construction work
    • Full driving licence
    • Some experience of working with equipment
    • Experience of working with or as a volunteer
