Job Purpose

As a Project Manager you will play an important role in helping us improve, maintain and preserve our wonderful waterway network for our customers to enjoy today and into the future. Projects comprise mainly around civil engineering works to maintain and improve our assets, covering a broad range of different schemes.


This role is to be based in Birmingham/Stoke/Hatton. Please state your preferred base location on your application form. This is a 1 year fixed term vacancy.

  • Capture project requirements and prepare a business case to justify investment in a project. Lead and direct the project team to ensure project objectives are achieved; manage conflicting requirements / objectives.  
  • Agree and establish success factors and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with the Sponsor. Monitor and report on KPIs.
  • Develop and implement a schedule of project activities and key milestones to achieve the project objectives.
  • Establish and agree project budgets including tolerances, risks and assumptions. Identify when expenditure will take place and develop cashflow forecasts. Report on financial performance.
  • Manage risks, issues and changes on the project.
  • Identify and prioritise stakeholder interests. Establish, maintain and implement effective communication plans. Adjust project communication requirements to the various stakeholders and the project team / organisation.
  • Ensure threats and opportunities are captured and proactively managed as risks.
  • Administer all aspects of contracts applicable to the project to ensure compliance.  
  • Handover and closure of the project, identifying areas for improvements and elements of good practice to be considered in future projects.
  • Manage projects in accordance with the Trust’s Policies and defined standards.
  • Implement procedures for processing documents, including incoming and outgoing information, filing and archiving. Ensure compliance with the Trust’s data and information policies and any regulatory requirements.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience


  • HND or other degree in a related discipline
  • Strong administration and management background.  
  • Experience of successfully managing multiple projects, preferably within civil engineering.
  • Robust knowledge of project management processes and systems.
  • Experience of contract management administration, preferably in NEC3.
  • Ability to manage stakeholders, taking account of their levels of influence.
  • Open, positive, can-do attitude which builds confidence and credibility both within the team and with stakeholders.  
  • Proficient in the use of a personal computer and business applications software e.g. Excel, Word and other MS office applications.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Project.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain project schedules, taking account of dependencies, critical path and resource requirements.
  • Ability to develop and agree budgets for projects, and control forecast and actual costs against the budgets.
  • Good standard of written and verbal communication, including experience in making formal presentations in project management or engineering subjects.
  • Comply with the Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and related standards.


  • Membership of an appropriate professional body i.e. Association for Project Management (APM), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Project / Programme Management accreditation / qualification i.e. Association for Project Management PMQ or equivalent, Managing Successful Programmes (MSP), Prince2.
  • Some experience of SAP particularly in the Logistics, Accounting and Information System modules.
  • Understanding / experience of our waterway network would be an advantage.
