We are currently seeking an Works Engineer to join our Infrastructure Services Team (London and Southeast) to manage Third Party Works.
The teams function is to help promoters achieve their objectives, transform the waterways and enrich lives, while at the same time protecting our customers, infrastructure, buildings, heritage and waterway environment from harm or damage that could result from the promoter’s work. The team recovers fees and charges which go to support the work of the Trust, and handles approximately 300 different schemes per year offering a completely varied work load.
The team links with other teams within the Trust on behalf of the developer to find the necessary solutions to undertake works that will, where possible, enhance the waterway and environment. The successful applicant will gain engineering knowledge and negotiation skills whilst working on a variety of schemes. This makes the workload completely variable which adds to the attraction of working in the team.
Day to day, you’ll have a busy and varied caseload of third party engineering works to manage taking place on or around our waterways and you’ll also be engaging with developers and other key stakeholders to ensure our customers are kept safe and that works don’t negatively impact the character or heritage of our waterways. The Trust recovers fees and charges for third party works undertaken which go to supporting the wider work of the trust, so income generation is a key part of this post.
Location & coverage
The role will be based working from home, with the allocation of a nearby Hub for collaborative working in Milton Keynes or Little Venice.
This is a regional role and there will be an expectation that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout regional, London & Southeast, network. See our network here (https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/canal-and-river-network).
Willingness to travel will be essential to accommodate the frequent visits and meeting requirements at our regional HUBs or occasionally other meeting venues or Trust hubs, canals in the local region and with Promoters at their sites or offices.
If you have a passion for engineering, then you’ll know what this takes – continuously improving your engineering knowledge, working across the Trust to find solutions, negotiating improvements to the waterway environment wherever possible, as well as having an organised approach and a commitment to accuracy. You’ll also be comfortable working with databases and meeting deadlines and other targets.
For graduates and newly qualified engineers, you’ll develop your engineering and negotiating skills by working on projects supported by managers and colleagues across the Trust. If you are a more experienced engineer, we can support you to expand your knowledge and experience with a variety of interesting work.
